ESC denounces pending deportation as inhumane act

Reports reaching the Emancipation Support Committee indicate that a new phase of shameful and dishonorable conduct has been initiated by immigration officials in this country. In the name of the good people of this Republic they have begun secretly rounding up immigrants from the continent of Africa without regard for national interests, international obligations and humanitarian considerations, for a flight of deportation which sources indicate will take place on Sunday. A number of individuals including those who have applications before the United Nations for refugee status and others who have been married for several years with Children have already been dramatically detained in this operation. The Immigration detention center has been locked down in anticipation of the impending flight. In this important season synonymous with family relatives cannot see or speak with their loved ones perhaps, for the last time.

Over the last decade it has emerged that undocumented migrants seeking a better life in this country suffer beatings, humiliation, torture, incarceration for inordinate periods and separation from their families without recourse. The Emancipation Support Committee has and continues to condemn the entrenched rogue elements in immigration, who dutifully oversee this saga of inhumanity underpinned by archaic laws and a culture of corruption. On behalf of migrants from all over the world the E.S.C. would like to refer the society’s attention to United Nations General Assembly resolution 45/158, which states that “the family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and, the State shall take appropriate measures to ensure the protection of the unity of the family.” President Barack Omama recently affirmed this righteous position a speech on immigration reform in his own country. “Undocumented workers”, he said, “broke our immigration laws, and I believe that they must be held accountable but the emphasis of our law enforcement resources must be focused on actual threats to our security. Felons, not families. Criminals, not children. Gang members, not a mother who’s working hard to provide for her kids…Not those immigrants who have been here a long time, that work hard, often in tough, low-paying jobs.

The Emancipation Support Committee call on government to:

  • Executive a stay of deportation for all those Africans from the continent who are current or former detainees of the Immigration Detention Center
  • Establish the Independent Review Committee which the Minister of National Security promised, to examine the details of their cases
  • fix the flawed inquiry and appeals process which has made it hard for so many to find justice
  • Rationalize the process of bond acquisition to reduce the abuse of arbitrary powers to discriminate against certain individuals

Executive action is needed to stop national practices that are out of sync with international best practice and the spirit of our nation. What we do now will say a lot about who we are as a country, and who we want to be for future generations. President Obama asked americans to consider the heartbreak and anxiety of children whose mothers or fathers might be taken away from them just because they didn’t have the right papers we too must ask ourselves if we, “are a nation that accepts the cruelty of ripping children from their parents’ arms? Or are we a nation that values families, and works to keep them together?”
